spanishSpanish may appear intimidating at first glance; Spanish speakers seem to speak so quickly and there are a lot of unfamiliar sounds. However, if you look a little further there may be more similarities to english than you thought!

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world with over 329 million native speakers.  Not only is it spoken in parts of Europe but also much of Central and South America.  Spanish and English both belong to the Indo-European family of languages and derive much of their vocabulary from Latin and Arabic.  This means that a lot of cognates can be found between the two and nearly 3,000 words in Spanish are instantly recognizable to English speakers.

Spanish is one of the 6 official languages of the United Nations and also widely used in the European Union.  Additionally, Spanish is one of the most popularly spoken second languages and ranked as the first most popular second language in America.

Spanish is a great first foreign language to learn and will help learn other related languages such as French, Italian, and Portuguese.  So whether you want to back-pack across Latin America or boost your resume; Spanish is a fun and rewarding language to learn!
